For the first time in many years, Drouant will be hosting a few privileged guests on the day these prestigious literary prizes are awarded.<\/p>\n

The Goncourt Academy was dreamed up by Edmond de Goncourt in 1882 to reward the “best prose work of the year”. On his death in 1896, his will revealed the establishment of the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Goncourt, and it was in 1903 that the first Goncourt Prize was awarded to John-Antoine Nau for his book Force Ennemie<\/em> published by Plume Editions.<\/p>\n

The small literature world, the press and the public were fascinated by this new literary society, which awarded its Goncourt prize for the first time at Drouant’s on 31 October 1914 (due to the war outbreak, the 1914 prize was not awarded until 1916).<\/p>\n

The academy has ten members who meet every first Tuesday of the month in the elegant salon Goncourt on the first floor of Drouant to discuss current literary events. Elected by co-option, “Les Dix” cannot be removed from their role but can choose to leave the academy. Since 2008 they are no longer appointed for life but until their 80th birthday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In 1926, while waiting for the results of the Goncourt, a group of writers decided to create an additional prize at the Drouant restaurant, the Renaudot prize – named after the physician and philanthropist Th\u00e9ophraste Renaudot (1586-1653), who was the forerunner of the written press by launching the “Gazette de France” in 1631.<\/p>\n

A ten-member jury meets in the Salon Renaudot each year on the day of the prize-giving ceremony to award the author of “a novel or a collection of short stories”. Announced at the same time as the Goncourt Prize, on the steps of the Ruhlmann staircase, the Renaudot winner is then expected in the restaurant to meet the journalists.<\/p>\n

In addition to the main prize, the jury has awarded a Renaudot prize for essays since 2003 and a Renaudot prize for paperbacks since 2009.
