Grande Cuvée Edition 172 Bottle (0.75L) | Naked Bottle

Krug Grande Cuvée was born from Joseph Krug’s dream to recreate the best champagne every year, regardless of climatic variations. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honoured this vision with a new edition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of champagne. Krug Grande Cuvée 172nd Edition, created around the 2016 harvest, is a champagne of great richness and fine elegance, transcending vintages. To create this Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée, Julie Cavil, the Cellar Master, sought to enhance the diverse aromatic expressions of the year with reserve wines from different plots and 10 other years, giving it a breadth of flavours and aromas that is impossible to express with wines from a single year. The attention given to the vines and Krug’s unique respect for the individual character of each plot and its wine allowed for the depth of expression in this Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

Krug considers each wine from each plot as a unique musician. From the solo vineyard, the purity of a single plot from a single year, to the full orchestra delivering the symphony of flavours of Krug Grande Cuvée, to a group of musicians interpreting the taste melody of a year with the vintage. Musicians have selected melodies to accompany the tasting.

Timeless and constant, Krug Grande Cuvée is the heart of the Krug identity. It is at its birth through the first fermentation in small oak barrels that Krug Grande Cuvée, like all other Krug, owes its personality: this dimension that defines the Krug style. The Krug exception, a unique champagne. Its methods guaranteeing the highest quality, its 19-hectare vineyard, the stringent requirements of its supplies over 56 hectares, and its three million bottles that have been patiently ageing for many years in its cellars make Krug the benchmark for Prestige Champagne.

    Food & champagne pairings

Krug Grande Cuvée lends itself to a myriad of culinary pairings, from the simplest to the most sophisticated. It is enjoyed as an aperitif with Jabugo ham and aged Comté or accompanied by oysters, grilled shrimp, Indian or Moroccan dishes, or with turbot and truffles, but also as a dessert with carrot cake, Tatin tart, or cheesecake.

    Ideal operating temperature

To be consumed between 9 and 12 °C.

    Potential of keeping

Like all wines, champagne can be kept for varying lengths of time, depending on the type. Under optimal storage conditions, champagne can be kept for 1 to 2 years for Brut cuvées, and up to 4/5 years or even longer for vintage and prestige champagnes. Whatever happens, rest assured that you'll never be able to open your champagne too early, as the Champagne Houses only release their cuvées when they have reached perfect ripeness and are ready for immediate consumption.

    Assembly :
Krug Grande Cuvée 172nd Edition is a blend of 146 wines from 11 different years, the youngest dating from 2016 and the oldest from the 1998 vintage. This Edition consists of 44% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay, and 20% Meunier. In total, the reserve wines from the House’s vast library represent 42% of the final blend, bringing the essential breadth and roundness to each Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée.
    Vinification :
Krug Grande Cuvée 172nd Edition is a cuvée composed around the 2016 harvest, a year with such contrasting climatic conditions that it became a caricature of the climatic pendulum. An extremely humid spring, with 70% more precipitation than the norm for the period between April and June, made vineyard work difficult and increased the risk of disease spread. A mild spell set in from flowering, allowing the vineyard to recover, and was followed by a heatwave at the end of ripening. The marathon harvest took place from September 9 to October 2 and resulted in healthy grapes as well as wines with expression and character, regardless of their grape variety and origin.
