Krug

Grande Cuvée 172nd edition Bottle (0.75L) | Box

Krug Grande Cuvée was born of Joseph Krug’s dream to recreate the best champagne every year, regardless of the vagaries of the weather. Since 1843, the House of Krug has paid tribute to this vision with a new edition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of champagne. Krug Grande Cuvée 172nd Edition with box, created around the 2016 harvest, is a champagne of great richness and fine elegance, beyond the vintages. To create this Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée, Cellar Master Julie Cavil sought to accentuate the year’s diverse aromatic expressions with reserve wines from different parcels and 10 other years, giving it an amplitude of flavors and aromas impossible to express with the wines of a single year. The attention paid to the vines and Krug’s unique respect for the individual character of each plot and its wine have enabled the depth of expression of this Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée.

A champagne for special occasions, presented in a luxurious box, Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition is the ideal gift. Krug considers each wine from each plot as a unique musician. From the solo Clos, the purity of a single parcel from a single year, to the full orchestra delivering the symphony of flavors of Krug Grande Cuvée, to an ensemble of musicians interpreting the gustatory melody of a year with the Vintage. Musicians have selected melodies to accompany the tasting.

Perennial and constant, Krug Grande Cuvée is the heart of the Krug identity. Krug Grande Cuvée owes its personality, like all other Krugs, to its birth by first fermentation in small oak barrels: this dimension which marks the Krug style. The Krug exception, a unique champagne. Its methods guaranteeing the highest quality, its 19-hectare vineyard, the strictness of its supplies on 56 hectares and its three million bottles that have been waiting for many years in its cellars make Krug the reference for Prestige Champagne.

    Alcohol content: 12%.

    Potential of keeping

Like all wines, champagne can be kept for varying lengths of time, depending on the type. Under optimal storage conditions, champagne can be kept for 1 to 2 years for Brut cuvées, and up to 4/5 years or even longer for vintage and prestige champagnes. Whatever happens, rest assured that you'll never be able to open your champagne too early, as the Champagne Houses only release their cuvées when they have reached perfect ripeness and are ready for immediate consumption.

    Assembly :
Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition is a blend of 146 wines from 11 different years, the youngest dating from 2016 and the oldest from the 1998 harvest. This Edition is composed of 44% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay and 20% Meunier. In all, reserve wines from the House’s vast library account for 42% of the final blend, bringing the fullness and roundness essential to each Edition de Krug Grande Cuvée.
    Vinification :
Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition is a cuvée composed around the 2016 harvest, a year with weather conditions so contrasting as to become a caricature of the climatic pendulum. An extremely wet spring, with 70% more rainfall than the norm for the period between April and June, made working the vines difficult and increased the risk of disease spreading. Mild weather set in from flowering, allowing the vineyards to recover, followed by a heatwave at the end of ripening. The marathon harvest from September 9 to October 2 produced healthy grapes and wines of expression and character, regardless of grape variety or origin.

Ageing: Around seven years in the cellars give it its distinctive expression and elegance. All in all, more than 20 years of painstaking work have been necessary to appreciate this Krug Grande Cuvée Edition.
